Lifeline

Education Where Nothing Else Can Go

War, displacement, disaster and poverty can remove a child from school overnight. The need to learn does not disappear with the classroom.

The Freedom Lifeline Tablet is IDEA’s educational platform for children living where conventional education has been interrupted or cannot reliably operate. It is designed as a self-contained learning environment that can function without internet or cellular service and deliver education directly into a child’s hands.

Built for the Child. Built for the Country.

A Lifeline program is not a foreign curriculum placed on a tablet. Each country edition is developed around the host country’s curriculum, languages, culture and learning priorities, with Ministries of Education and local educators able to participate in review and approval.

Literacy, numeracy, stories, games, social and emotional learning, life skills and visual learning can all be adapted for children with limited schooling and for those who have experienced disruption or trauma. Content can also support more than one language, helping children learn in the language they understand while developing additional language skills.

Safe by Design

Lifeline is an educational device, not an open consumer tablet. Children do not need access to the internet, social media, app stores or online communication in order to learn.

The learning environment is protected and intentionally simple, with child-friendly navigation, voice assistance and locally relevant characters and imagery.

Education That Can Continue

Humanitarian education cannot end with the delivery of a device.

Lifeline is designed so educational content can continue to grow. Local support and distribution points can provide new learning material, technical assistance and ongoing educational resources without requiring the child to go online. The original Lifeline model calls these community points Freedom Hubs.

Where formal education becomes available again, the objective is not to compete with it. Lifeline can help children continue learning during disruption and support their eventual return to their country’s education system.

A school may be destroyed.      A family may be displaced.      A child may be far from a teacher.
Learning does not have to stop.
